{"id":2910,"date":"2015-06-22T22:06:11","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T02:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/?p=2910"},"modified":"2015-06-26T22:16:52","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T02:16:52","slug":"speaking-at-the-2015-north-american-asexuality-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/?p=2910","title":{"rendered":"Speaking at the 2015 North American Asexuality Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/asexualoutreach.org\/2015\/06\/20\/2015-north-american-asexuality-conference\/\">2015 North American Asexuality Conference<\/a> in Toronto this year and gave a workshop called &#8220;Handling Detractors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/detractors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2911 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/detractors-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"detractors\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/detractors-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/detractors-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/detractors.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>My workshop was very low-key; I just passed out index cards, got people to write down a comment that had been said to them about their asexual-spectrum or aromantic-spectrum identity, and collected them in an envelope, then pulled them out one by one to talk about them with the attendees. I had a pretty big audience and everyone was very responsive; I was only talking maybe half the time. I enjoyed hearing everyone&#8217;s perspectives and trying to give some advice on how to handle these comments. It went very well.<\/p>\n<p>Besides my workshop, I had a table for my book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/booksign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2912 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/booksign-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"booksign\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/booksign-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/juliesondradecker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/booksign.jpg 922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I collected names to give away two hardcovers and two audio copies of the book. Quite a few people already owned the book and had brought it with them, and they got me to sign it. It was pretty amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Besides those two things, I went to several other workshops: Explaining Asexuality to Non-Aces, Ace-Friendly LGBTQ Organizations, Asexuality and Social Media, and Asexuality and Feminism. Plus I got to make some new friends, hang out at restaurants, collect some great items from other aces, and have some wonderful conversations.
